The people of Israel worshipped God in the Tabernacles of Moses and David and later in the temple of Solomon which was destroyed by the ravaging Babylonians. Zerubbabel rebuilt the temple after the remnant of Judah returned from exile. The temple during the reign of Herod was renovated and rebuilt just to please the Jews in Israel. But Jesus during His ministry on earth prophesied against the temple built by Herod that ‘there would not be a stone left one upon the other’ (Luke 21:6); which came to pass in 70 AD. In the Old Testament God spoke through Amos 9:11,12 that “In that day I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen and repair its breaches and raise up its ruins and rebuild it as in the days of old, that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations who are called by my name”.
God never swore that He would rebuild the tabernacle of Moses or the temple built by Solomon or by Zerubbabel or by King Herod but only the tabernacle built by David for all the nations (which included the gentiles also) to worship Him.
Except for David’s tabernacle, all the other worship places in Israelite history had the outer court, the Holy place and the Holy of Holies and a veil divided the Holy place and the Holy of Holies.
When Jesus died on the cross the veil of the temple was torn into two and since then the temple as promised by God has become like the tabernacle of David. David’s tabernacle (1 Chronicle 15:1) was just a tent supported by poles with a canvas on top to shield the ark from the heat, cold and the rain. This is what Stephen preached, that God no longer resides in magnificent buildings and lost his life.
Only the Jews still hold on to the old method of worship through rituals. But all Christians, including the Jew and the gentile worship God in David’s tabernacle. This is the point James brought out in the council of Jerusalem, that the tabernacle of David had been restored and the gentiles are now part of the worship of the Living God (Acts 15:15,16).
David’s tabernacle signifies less structure, no rituals and performances but more passion praise and presence. There are no restrictions anymore, no stipulated visiting hours for people nor a priest / High priest required to usher people into God’s presence. God used Jesus, the Son of David to rebuild the tabernacle of David so that “all men including the gentiles may seek HIM”.
