”So when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. Then after the sop, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, That thou doest, do quickly” (V 26, 27).
Having a meal together in the Middle East with someone, symbolized a close bond of friendship. The disciples had been with Jesus for three and a half years and this supper was going to be their last meal.
In the Jewish style of dining during Jesus’ time, one large dish in a big bowl was placed in the center of a low table and everyone would sit around it. There were no spoons or forks at that time and the bread which was broken down into smaller fragments, would serve as a spoon to dip into a portion of the dish. That single piece of bread which was dipped into the main dish was called the sop. As an act of displaying very intimate friendship, the Jewish host would dip the piece of bread into a good portion of the dish and place it in the mouth of the guest.
Jesus by giving the sop to Judas was implying - ‘Judas, no matter what’s running in your mind, I still want you to know that having been with you all these years you are still a special friend to Me and I truly love you. Receive this sop and do what you intend to do – quickly’!
