Was Jim Elliot and his friends’ outreach a fatal and fruitless missionary jour¬ney? Elizabeth Elliot, Jim’s wife was born to missionary parents in Belgium. She was zealous for God like her parents and husband who were missionaries. Eliz¬abeth (Betty) along with their ten-month old baby had all reasons to walk away after her husband and missionary friends were massacred by the Auca (Aw-cuz) tribe. But unswerved by depression or fear, she pursued her ministry of working in the jungles of Ecuador. For a few months, Betty remained with the Quichua (Kee-chew-wah) tribe where Jim and she first ministered to. She was determined to learn the Auca lan¬guage to win that tribe for Christ. The Christian Quichuas and Betty interceeded for the Auca people, asking God to open their hearts to receive the Gospel. Two years after her husband’s death, Betty with her three year old daughter went to serve the Auca tribe carrying God’s message of forgiveness through Jesus Christ. For many of us today, that is inconceivable. Betty was willing to forgive, love and joyfully minister to the very ones who murdered her loved one. But her drive was that ‘Jesus died for all and salvation was for all’. Moreso, Jim loved and died while ministering to the Aucas. Therefore, her love for them intensified. Few years later, the inevitable occurred. The Aucas embraced the Gospel mes¬sage One of Jim’s murderers gave his life to Christ. From the tireless efforts of Betty and her aid, some portions of the Bible were translated in the Auca language for the natives to read. The Aucas went on to pursue friendly connections with their long tribal rivals. In the end, a third of the tribe became Christians and a church was also established. Once feared and a violent tribe were transformed into a quiet and peace loving group of people. In this generation Jim and Elizabeth Elliot‘s lives and their willingness to sub¬mit to God’s purpose alone have inspired millions across the globe. As Elizabeth said, “there is nothing worth living for, unless it is worth dying for. The secret is Christ in me, not me in a different set of circumstances”. Therefore, let us stay committed to God’s plan for our lives irrespective of our situation!
