PSALM 23 – SONG OF SEVEN COVENANTS

There are many names of God with which He identified Himself to His servants in the Old Testament like Elohim, El-Elyon, Adonai, El-Shaddai El-Roi and more…… But there are various titles of Jehovah or the redemptive names of God which is used as a compound name with other names to reveal the nature of God and His character, in regard to meeting the needs of His people. David the Psalmist used seven such covenant names of God, to establish his relationship with God, just the way a sheep would relate with its shepherd.

The Lord is my shepherd (V1)                              Jehovah Rohi (Ps 23:1)

I shall not want (V1) –                                         Jehovah Jireh (Gen 22:14)

He makes me lie down in green pastures

and leads me beside still waters  (V2) -                Jehovah Shalom (Judges 6:24)

He restores my soul (V3) -                                   Jehovah Rapha (Exodus 15:26)

He leads me in paths of righteousness (V3) -        Jehovah Tsidkenu (Jer 23:5, 6)

Thou art with me (V4) -                                       Jehovah Shammah (Ez 48:35)

Thou preparest a table before me

In the presence of my enemies (V5) -                  Jehovah Nissi (Exodus 17:15)

The number seven in the Bible denotes spiritual perfection.

When we allow the Lord to be our Shepherd – we lack nothing, we have peace and healing, we are led in the right path, we have Him with us always and finally grants victory in the presence of our enemies.

Thought for the day: If Jesus is our Good Shepherd – to whom does the wool belong?
