SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS

When Jesus went around preaching and teaching, He quoted what Isaiah spoke about the Jews saying, “They have eyes but do not see” (Matthew 13: 14).

When Jesus came down to the earth, most of the Jews failed to identify Him as their King whereas the wise men came all the way from the east seeking  Jesus – the King of the Jews. God had put the pages of the Old Testament from Genesis to Malachi in the womb of Mary and the word of God became flesh in the form of Jesus!

The Pharisees and the Scribes were so engrossed with the parchments of the Old Testament on the shelf that they failed to see, hear or understand Him.  Even when Jesus tried to reveal Himself as the Son of God, they wanted to stone Him. They had natural vision but their spiritual eyes were like shut down computers! They thought that they got it right, little realizing that they were spiritually blind.

After Saul met Jesus on the road to Damascus, he was so blinded by the visitation, that he lost his natural vision for three days. While fasting and praying in the meantime, he saw Ananias with his spiritual eyes before he could see him with his natural eyes (Acts 9:9 - 12). Paul and Peter served the Lord Jesus Christ effectively with their spiritual eyes opened to discern and receive help from angels time and again, when no flesh could help.

Our Spiritual journey is not about seeking new horizons but seeing with a new pair of eyes – Spiritual eyes! What are we asking God when we sing the song, ‘Open the eyes of my heart Lord'?

Thought for the day: Spiritual blindness is not a bliss like ignorance – but a bane!
