PETER’S WALK ON WATER

Matthew 14: 22 – 27

Jesus, knowing that the high calling of His disciples would take them to face impossible situations in their mission, also knew that unless God intervened nothing supernatural would happen. His primary agenda was to prepare His men to navigate through hopeless situations in life like their Master, who gracefully walked above those dire circumstances.

After the tiresome job of serving the five thousand and more, Jesus sent His disciples away and went to pray alone, knowing that God would take care of His transport. The wind and the waves rose against the disciples as they rowed their boat for hours and at the fourth watch of the night (3.00 AM), they saw a figure coming towards them walking on water. After the initial screams thinking it was a ghost, they were terrified, but Jesus spoke to them saying “Take heart, It is I; have no fear”. Seeing Jesus walk on the sea, Peter grabbed the ‘Kairos moment’ and asked Him, ’Lord, can I too walk on the water to come to you?’

What made Peter take that decisive step to get down into the sea?

Peter had seen all that Jesus had been doing and on the basis of this knowledge – he boldly stepped into the water. It was not the water that held Peter without sinking but the word of promise that Jesus gave – COME!

He walked on water till unbelief shifted his focus to the waves. The other disciples did not want to take a risk like Peter but preferred to stay in the boat after evaluating the situation from human perspective. They probably did not want to get their clothes wet!

Thought for the day: When we stand on the word of God by faith, there is nothing in this life which can topple us!
