Jairus, a well-known leader of the Jewish synagogue, sought Jesus in utter desperation, to invite Him home and heal his twelve year old daughter, who was at the point of death. As Jesus obliged and began to walk towards Jairus’ home, a helpless woman debilitated for twelve long years with an incurable disease and unable to advertise her presence in public (because of the Jewish law), surreptitiously touched the garment of Jesus - to experience instant healing!
Jesus perceiving that someone had touched His garment with faith and not by casual contact, stopped to enquire, who it was. When the woman revealed herself to Jesus with great apprehension, He commended her faith, called her daughter, and sent her home in peace – holistically healed!
With pressure mounting on poor Jairus every second, after the sudden delay caused by the woman’s intervention, received the heart-breaking news that his daughter was dead. Overhearing the report and knowing that Fear and Faith are mutually exclusive, Jesus turned to Jairus and said, “Do not fear, just believe (Have faith)”. Jairus, who had just witnessed the miraculous healing of the woman in front of his eyes, never reacted but held on to his faith and followed Jesus.
When Jesus entered Jairus’ home, He dispelled all the doubters from the scene, took with Him only the parents of the child and a few disciples who had faith, to raise the child from the dead.
Looking back, we see that Jesus taught and demonstrated to Jairus, that co-existence of Fear and Faith in a believer can hinder a miracle. Fear is a weapon from the enemy while faith is a gift from God.
Thought to ponder -
“When we feed fear, faith will starve, When we feed faith, fear will starve”.
