MARTHA MISSED A MIRACLE

LUKE 10:38-42

After Jesus shared the parable of the Good Samaritan, to teach the lawyer on ‘who was his neighbour’, He entered a village called Bethany, where Martha received Him into her house. Knowing that Jesus would spend His day there, she started to work in the kitchen to serve Him a sumptuous meal. Martha treated Jesus as a very special guest by slogging in the kitchen; while Mary looked at Jesus as a Teacher by sitting down at His feet to keenly listen to His teachings.

After some time when Martha complained to Jesus about Mary, He defended Mary by saying that she had chosen the right portion of life, while Martha was anxious and troubled about many other things. Martha failed to understand that Jesus, who turned the water into wine in the wedding at Cana and multiplied the bread and fish to feed more than five thousand, was sitting in her living room.

If she had sat along with Mary to listen to the teachings of Jesus Christ, He would have probably set before them a miracle meal at the stroke of lunch. Martha worked and worked so hard on her own, that she eventually missed her miracle for the day, without realizing that Jesus would never let them go hungry.

When we do all the work by our own strength, without letting the Master into our vocation, we actually deny Him the opportunity to work miracles in our lives.

Thought for the day:

When we work all by ourselves – God rests

When we rest in God – He works!
