Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God (Matthew 5:8)
When a medical doctor refers to the human heart, he is talking about the physical condition of the heart, while a spiritual man gives it a different meaning. For example, when a prophet of God says, that ‘the heart is not right’ he actually means that the motive or the intention of one’s heart is not right.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus raised the New Testament Christianity to a higher level, where the motive behind an action was more important than the action itself. When He referred to the pure in heart, He charged us – ‘not to have mixed motives while doing a thing or loving a person, but show a total undivided loyalty to the person concerned – even God Himself!’ We should seek God and follow Him without any ulterior motives but with love as the chief aim.
The choice that Ruth made to follow Naomi is a perfect illustration because she followed Naomi not seeking any personal benefits but with virtually no axe to grind. She demonstrated a passionate commitment to follow Naomi to Bethlehem and accept her God and her people as her own. She was not double-minded or drawn aside from Naomi and God blessed her by inducting her into the genealogy of Jesus Christ.
Summing up, Jesus says that when we do not have any mixed motives in following Him, we will then see – which in the Greek means perceive or know Him.
Thought for the day: Those who have the right motive to seek Jesus - will get to know Him.
